In the last two weekend we were also able to lengthen the support beam across the kitchen entry so we could have a bar and cabinet with a column in the way. This basically entialed me staying out of the way as my family over engineered the heck out of a ceiling joist, but the end result is GREAT! Ok what they did was take out the 8 ft. 2x10 and create a temporary column (out of two 2x4s) to support while they fixed the end supports by notching out an area for the new 12ft 2x10 to go into. This sounds easy but it took compression tools and a jack. Here are some photos of the end result.
